The three types of AI interview software, how they work, eight platforms compared on format, AI features and published pricing, a checklist for the AI scoring layer and a one-week trial plan.

Key takeaways
- Three product types share the "AI interview software" label: AI-conducted structured interviews, async recordings with AI analysis, and live interview assistance.
- Decide the type first; live assistance solves a different problem from first-round screening.
- In a demo, confirm identical questions per role, evidence beside every score and clear handling of incomplete interviews.
- Ask what inputs produce the score and whether face, tone or voice traits are scored — and get the answer in writing.
- Run a one-week trial on a role you have already filled, including completing an interview yourself on a phone.
AI interview software runs or supports job interviews with artificial intelligence — most often by delivering a fixed set of questions to candidates, recording their answers and scoring or summarising them so recruiters review the strongest evidence first. Vendors sell three different product types under the same label, so the first step is to decide which one you need; only then compare platforms. This guide explains how AI interview software works, compares eight platforms on format, AI features and published pricing, gives a scoring-layer checklist for AI video interview software, and a one-week trial plan. We make one of the products compared — Beatview — and say so where it appears.
Three types of AI interview software
| Type | What the candidate does | What the reviewer receives | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI-conducted structured interview | Answers a fixed set of timed questions in their own time | Answers plus scores per dimension, with the answer beside each score | First round, many candidates, one role definition |
| Async recording with AI analysis | Records answers to fixed prompts | Video or transcript plus summaries or rankings | You want the recording itself to be what the client sees |
| Live interview assistance | Attends a normal live interview | Transcript, notes and a summary after the call | Later rounds with hiring managers — not screening |
The first two overlap heavily (see one-way video interview vs AI interviewer). The third solves a different problem and should not be on the same shortlist.
How AI interview software works

- You define a question set for the role, with time limits and language.
- The system invites candidates — manually or when they meet a rule you set.
- Each candidate answers the same questions within the time limit.
- The software transcribes and evaluates the answers, producing scores and written feedback.
- Completed interviews appear in a review queue; a recruiter reviews and decides.

AI interview software compared (2026)
Method: formats, AI features and prices were read from each vendor's own website on 15 September 2026 and are the same facts used on our alternatives pages, where every source is linked. Plans change; confirm with each vendor. Feature depth is not scored here — test it yourself using the checklist below.

Checklist: evaluating the AI scoring layer
This is the part that worries buyers — and regulators. In a demo, you are answering one question: can I see enough to defend a decision this tool influenced?
| Ask the vendor | Acceptable answer | Refuse |
|---|---|---|
| What inputs produce the score? | A named, bounded list — e.g. the transcript of the answers | "Multiple signals" with no list |
| Are face, tone or voice traits scored? | A direct yes or no, in writing | Evasion |
| What are the score dimensions, and how are they combined? | Named dimensions and a stated rule | A single opaque number, "proprietary" |
| What happens on an incomplete interview? | No score; candidate still reviewable | A partial score treated as comparable |
| How do candidates learn AI is used, and can they request human review? | Disclosure text you can read; a stated route | No disclosure support |
| Does the model change over time? | A version and change policy | "It learns from you" with no detail |
Then open one completed candidate and confirm you can see the question as asked, the answer, the score per dimension beside it, a written reason, and the invited/started/completed timestamps. If you cannot write a two-sentence justification for a mid-ranked candidate from that screen, the tool is not defensible for your use. Refuse accuracy percentages, "bias-free" or "validated for your role" claims without a published method, sample and date. More on this in explainable AI in recruiting.
A one-week evaluation plan
- Pick one role you have already filled and note which candidates turned out strong.
- Build the question set in each shortlisted tool; note how long it took.
- Complete an interview yourself on a phone, on mobile data. This alone eliminates products.
- Abandon a second attempt halfway and check what the review queue shows.
- Write a two-sentence justification for one candidate using only what the tool shows.
- Share one candidate as you would with a client and view what they receive.
- Export the role's data and open it outside the tool.

Where Beatview fits
Beatview conducts structured first-round interviews with a fixed question set per role and returns scores on relevance, clarity, depth of knowledge and overall, with the answer beside each score and written feedback per question. Scores come from the content of answers; nothing visual is scored. The overall match score is the plain average of the resume and interview scores — no configurable weighting, per-rater normalisation or bias dashboard. An incomplete interview produces no score and the candidate stays reviewable. Live-call assistance is not part of the product. See AI interviews and pricing.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI interview software?
Software that uses AI to run or support job interviews — typically delivering a fixed set of questions, recording candidates’ answers and scoring or summarising them so recruiters can review the strongest evidence first.
What is the best AI interview software?
It depends on your need. Agencies wanting screening and structured AI interviews in one workflow often choose Beatview; enterprises wanting a full suite look at HireVue or VidCruiter; teams wanting simple one-way video at a published price compare Hireflix, Willo or Spark Hire; test-led teams consider TestGorilla or Vervoe.
How much does AI interview software cost?
Published prices (checked September 2026) range from Hireflix at $75 per month billed yearly and Willo at £49 per live role per month to Spark Hire at $249 per month billed annually and Beatview Pro at $179 per month billed annually; HireVue, VidCruiter and Vervoe quote on request.
Does AI interview software analyse facial expressions?
It should not, and many vendors now score only the content of answers. HireVue stopped using facial analysis in 2021. Ask every vendor in writing whether face, tone or voice traits are scored.
Can AI interview software replace recruiters?
No. It removes scheduling and orders evidence for the first round. Recruiters still review answers, handle exceptions and decide who moves forward.
